How to Calculate Age on a Date
Birthday, target date, answer — with the leap-year and timezone traps.
Subtract the birth date from the target date. Round down if the birthday has not happened yet that year.
Age on a date is not just "today − birthday". It is "has the birthday already happened in the target year?" If yes, age = year diff; if no, age = year diff − 1.

Quick answer
Subtract the birth date from the target date. Round down if the birthday has not happened yet that year.
Key points
- ▸ Formula: start with target_year − birth_year.
- ▸ If target_date is before (birth_month, birth_day) in target year, subtract 1.
- ▸ Leap-year birthday (Feb 29): most jurisdictions treat Mar 1 as the legal birthday in non-leap years.
- ▸ For retirement, pensions, and legal milestones — the day of the birthday itself usually counts as "that age".
- ▸ Future-date questions ("how old will I be on 2050-01-01?") use the same formula.
Examples
- Born 1990-06-15, target 2025-03-102025 − 1990 = 35. Has June 15 happened by March 10? No. Age = 34.
- Born 1990-06-15, target 2025-09-102025 − 1990 = 35. Has June 15 happened by September 10? Yes. Age = 35.
- Leap dayBorn 2000-02-29, target 2025-02-28. Most jurisdictions: not yet 25. Target 2025-03-01: age 25.

Frequently asked questions
› How are leap-year birthdays handled? How-to
Legally varies by country. UK/US common law: March 1 in non-leap years. Some jurisdictions use Feb 28. Our calculator uses March 1 as the default.
› Does timezone matter?
For birthdays yes — if you were born at 23:00 in London, you are technically one day older in Sydney. Most calculators ignore time of day and just use the calendar date.
› How accurate are online calculators and converters? Trust & accuracy
Online calculators are only as accurate as the numbers, units, assumptions, and rounding choices you enter. Recheck the input values first, then compare the formula against your real situation. For legal, tax, medical, financial, or professional decisions, treat the result as a planning estimate, not advice.
› What inputs should I double-check first? Troubleshooting
Double-check units, dates, percentages, decimal placement, and whether the input is before-tax, after-tax, gross, net, original, or final. Most calculator mistakes come from feeding the right formula the wrong base. If the result feels off, rebuild it from a simple worked example.
› Why do two calculators sometimes give different answers? Comparison
Two calculators may round at different steps, use different defaults, or interpret the same label differently. Percent, time, finance, and unit tools are especially sensitive to basis and rounding rules. Compare the formula, not just the final number, before deciding which result to trust.
